I first started working in computers in high school. There I learned BASIC, Pascal and programming logic. After high school I took the Van Zyl and Pritchard computer course (a highly respected course in South Africa) which focused on programming logic and COBOL. The culmination of the Van Zyl and Pritchard course was the Computer Users Council exam, which I wrote and passed in May 1991.

At my first job I worked with Dataflex and was part of a team that worked on creating inventory programs for South African Embassies around the world.

After getting married and moving to the U.S. I dabbled in computers and took some courses at a local community college. Those included (among others) Visual Basic 6.0 Professional I and II, CIS Concepts and Programming. I also got my hands on some "Dummies" books and got online! In June 2002, I decided that I needed more "formal" training and started studying to become a Certified Internet Webmaster. I completed that and the following additional Prosoft exams:

CIW Associate exam
CIW Professional exam
CIW JavaScript exam
CIW Perl exam
CIW Site Designer exam
CIW E-commerce exam

For more information on these credentials and CIW certifications from Prosoft, visit http://www.certmag.com/issues/aug02/dept_insidecert.cfm online or the Prosoft Learning Corporation at http://www.ciw-certified.com/certifications/program.asp.
At present I am working on teaching myself Java and plan to do .NET in the near future.
